Monroe, Wis (WMTV) The Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Services (MOSES) hosted the first “In Her Boots” workshop of the 2018 season Thursday.

Emily and Brandi Harris hosted the workshop at their organic dairy farm, Wylymar Farms, in Monroe.

More than a dozen women showed up to learn skill-builing, gain resources, network with other farmers and agricultural leaders, and more. The workshop went from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. covered ergonomics, machinery use for women and more.

Emily Harris, a fourth-generation farmer, was trained in Navy mechanic school and shared details about how she raises her cows, uses her farming equipment and more.

She said, for as long as she can remember, she has wanted to be a farmer.

“We wanted to take this opportunity to share our farming story to help promote and support women in agriculture and educate on what's happening in the dairy industry," Harris said.

While the number of farms in the U.S. has been on the decline for many years, the number owned and operated by women is on the rise, according to the USDA Census of Agriculture.

Harris has ran her own dairy operation since 2010 and is certified organic. The Harrises milk 50 Jersey cows, care for 105 cows and sell their milk to area cheese factories.

“We plant beans, corn, alfalfa, we grow winter wheat, winter rye. We try to grow as much of the feed as we can for winter.

Everything Harris grows is organic.

“It’s easy to get down, you are out here by yourself, working in the elements and to share it with all of these cool people and all the ag leaders here, it is just so motivating,” she said.

The MOSES website has a schedule of "In Her Boots" workshops.

Another uplifting and encouraging story. What an inspiration for women who are interested in farming and reaching out for this educational opportunity.

We featured MOSES in our magazine a while back. Glad to hear they're still going strong.
