Today, we cast Lacy Lou for a hoof trim using the instructions in my book. Casting has become our preferred method for hoof trims, but it does take a least 3, ideally 5 people so it can be done quickly.

First, she was haltered tightly, and tied down low to the ground. A towel was tucked in around her eyes.

A 2-inch cotton rope was put into place.

And down she went with only the mere mention of a tug from behind.

We've gotten so good at this that when Lacy Lou started to poo, Jake grabbed a shovel with one hand and tucked it in for a load.

Her top back leg was secured with a smaller rope.

And then her front. (Lacy Lou was moaning adorably the entire time while Julie whispered love sonnets to keep her calm.)

My vet, Shelly, so loved our electric hoof knife she bought one also. That way we can have two going at the same time. Connie went to work on the front hoof.

Lickety split. We let her up to get her rumen going again, then popped her onto her other side to trim the other two feet.

Covering her eyes not only helped keep her calm, it also kept hoof chips from going into her eyes.

Good job to have done. Thanks for posting MaryJane. Seems to be less stressful for sure. Nice you have such good helpers.
