Hello!

My name is Ginger Kelly and my husband's name is Ken. We live in Central Massachusetts, in a little town called Charlton.

I am an attorney who has been engaged in agriculture most of my life. My family was in the dairy business, years ago. I've raised horses, cattle, swine and poultry. My husband is an engineer who is actively engaged in water conservation and solar energy.

We own and operate a very small homestead, Kelly Homestead Apiary, where we raise our own organic food and do our best to engage in ideas and concepts involving nutrient-density, permaculture, conservation, organic, and sustainable agriculture.

Like us on Facebook and view a few photos and videos of our homestead at https://www.facebook.com/KellyHomesteadApiary

We are very interested in learning more about Heritage Jersey cattle and reading stories from different folks. We have a Miniature Jersey on our homestead named Little Bit. We also have an Irish Dexter/Jersey named Oliver. We are looking forward to breeding Little Bit, AI, within this month or next. It will be wonderful to have a new calf next spring/early summer, hopefully.

We look forward to meeting all of you. Perhaps other people from the Northeast will be joining this forum soon. Who knows?

Cheers and Best to all of you ~Ginger Kelly

This is a photo of Little Bit, taken about a week ago. She's showing off her new bling.

I love your sweet goats. Your tiny little guy is totally adorable.

This is the welcome wagon forum (under all forums). You are posting on a thread I created called, "Salutations from Massachusetts" which, generally, has things about our farm. If you want to continue to post on this thread, you are absolutely welcome. I really don't mind. In fact, I love it. I can see all your posts and get notifications of your postings, which is fine for me. But there may be a better option for you.

If you want to create a thread on welcome wagon of your very own this is possible. Go to All Forums, then Welcome Wagon, Start a new thread and entitle it anything you like. We can all go there and look at your posts. If you need any help posting, there is an awesome FAQ section and lots of good administrative help. Reach out to me if you need any help.

I love your posts and don't want you to stop. Like I said, keep posting and you are welcome to post on "Salutations from Massachusetts" as you are doing, no problem. Like I mentioned before, your goats are adorable and I like getting the notifications of your posts in my email inbox.

What a tiny little guy. Cute.
MMcCoy Posted - Nov 09 2016 : 2:23:54 PM
My goats are all boys. But I am looking into getting some to breed. Nigerian Dwarf. They are suppose to be great milkers. And they are very cute.
We have one buck, who was the runt and sterile. We call him Jack. Got him from the same farm as Rose. He was a freebie. I fell in love with him instantly. Everyone who meets him does. He touches everyones soul and makes everyone smile.

Nice shelter for your goat. Do you milk them? I don't have goats but like to use the milk to make soap. Another member on the chatroom raises goats too. Thanks for sharing Maureen.

We also have goats on our farm. They are constant entertainment. They usually keep me company whenever I am doing work around the farm. I made a shelter today for the goat pen. I am hoping to get more goats so they are going to need more housing. My boy Frank moved right in after I built it. So glad he approves.

Pretty Rose, indeed! I love the way she looks at you with her flashy eyelashes. Sweet!
farmlife Posted - Nov 06 2016 : 7:32:15 PM
Rose is just stunning! We're suckers for pretty cows around here.
CloversMum Posted - Nov 06 2016 : 05:35:34 AM
Welcome Maureen! I have to agree with everyone else's comments about your Rose. She is so very pretty! I do like all of her contrasting markings. She is very striking!

txbikergirl Posted - Nov 05 2016 : 7:02:13 PM
and rose's red bangs with the dark face is such a gorgeous contrast. she has a lot of beauty going on, can't wait to see her as she grows up.
maryjane Posted - Nov 05 2016 : 11:42:40 AM
And I have to add that Rose's eyes are particularly gorgeous--big and very dark chocolate against the white. Just lovely. I could get lost in those eyes.
txbikergirl Posted - Nov 05 2016 : 08:05:56 AM
yes maureen, i asked because with a white muzzle i was sure she had a white switch. i am in LOVE with jersey's with white muzzles, white splashes, and white switches.

i have two girls colored like that, and then one all golden brown jersey with a dark switch. but they are all so loveable, i just adore them all.
MMcCoy Posted - Nov 04 2016 : 6:39:45 PM
Rose was born 4/12/16 so she is still a baby, at least to me she is. She is the still small enough to squeeze through into the feeder and get into the middle when it gets low. It's like her play pen. She also thinks it is a great place for a break and likes to nap there too. My other 2 who are half Hereford and bigger than her, they are too wide to fit through the feeder. It won't be long before she will be too big also.
I believe her switch is white.
txbikergirl Posted - Nov 04 2016 : 5:14:44 PM
oh maureen, rose is just gorgeous. how old is she now? she has similar coloring to my elsa. and just curious, what color is her switch (the hair at the end of her tail)?

i think i might just have to come steal her away to come to texas and keep sally o'mally, elsa and beatrice company. and warning - cows are addictive! don't think you'll stop where you are, they are truly like large dogs and are just so sweet and fun.
NellieBelle Posted - Nov 04 2016 : 4:57:24 PM
Oh my goodness, she is drop dead gorgeous! What a beautiful cow Rose is. How precious is she? I love her eyes and coloring. Thank you for sharing her photo Maureen.

Thank you for the nice welcome. Here is a photo of Rose, our first Jersey. She is sweet and pretty.

I was checking the status of their hay and decided it was a nice place for a break. Rose came over for a snack. She is very curious and she has the cutest face.

Hi Maureen. Glad to see you in the HJO Chat room! I can't wait to hear more about your farm. There is a lot to learn and such good advice in this chat room. I've learned a lot. My best wishes to you, your family and your farm. See you soon!
NellieBelle Posted - Nov 03 2016 : 04:56:14 AM
Welcome Maureen! Nice to meet new cow folk and read about their farm and animals. May your life and adventure on your farm always be good. Life on the farm, expect the unexpected. Wouldn't want it any other way. You will have to post some photos of your cows. You will enjoy this HJO chatroom, full of good folks and information. Again, welcome!
maryjane Posted - Nov 02 2016 : 6:56:07 PM
Hearty big welcome Maureen! My first Jersey milk cow was named Rose. I milked her with my first born on my back in 1979. Your entire menagerie sounds wonderful. Yes, farming is one great big learning opportunity. Every time my girls (and bull boys) teach me one more hard lesson, I remember to thank them, my critters.
MMcCoy Posted - Nov 02 2016 : 5:16:21 PM
My name is Maureen and my family and I bought our farm 4 years ago. We just purchased our first calves this past summer. One of them is a beautiful Jersey named Rose. The other 2 are Jersey/Hereford. They are all very pretty. Rose is the youngest and smallest. We are new to having cows. We have horses, chickens, goats, one duck and now 3 calves. Our intention is to breed our cows see how is goes from there. I have learned that things don't always go as intended. We were actually only going to get 2 calves but couldn't pass up Rose so we brought her home too.
We live in Wisconsin, right by the Mississippi River.
I will be looking for lots of advice because I am learning as I go.

Thank you. Tiny Bit is a heifer. We are so excited. She's a champ at halter training, already!

maryjane Posted - Sep 26 2016 : 06:37:47 AM
Congrats!!! Thanks for the photos and update.
farmlife Posted - Sep 25 2016 : 8:49:55 PM
Good for you! Is Tiny Bit a bull or a heifer?
NellieBelle Posted - Sep 25 2016 : 05:08:59 AM
Congratulations once again on Little Bit Kelly and calf, Tiny Bit Kelly. And the liquid gold is a lot to be thankful for. Happy for you both. Thank you so much for the update and photos!
