I am so happy to be a member of this organization! I look forward to getting to know you all and to share thoughts and ideas for heritage Jerseys. I have never had my own milk cow! A little about myself - I applied and was chosen to be in a beginning farmer and rancher program for women here in Texas last year, sponsored by Holistic Management International. I "graduated" in February and currently am a member of a management club that practices holistic management. I am in the beginning stages of setting up our farm using the principles taught, and I cannot imagine having a real farm without a real, heritage jersey! I have always loved the look of the Jersey and I want to buy one this year!! I have enjoyed reading the posts thus far. Thank you Mary Jane for setting up this organization so that like-minded people can share ideas and thoughts!

Good morning Valerie,

We do sell our goat milk as we have a raw milk permit for the state of Idaho. We fall under a small herd exemption law. I also make goat milk soaps and am going to experiment with goat milk candles this week ... should be interesting. And, of course, we drink it and I make cheese with it. But to be honest, I am eagerly looking forward to my Jersey milk this fall!

Let us know when your blog is up and running. Holistic management is something of great interest in our family and we hope to incorporate more and more of its principles as time and money allow. We do what we can with what we presently have.

hi val! believe it or not, i too met my hubby online... and i also wasn't "that kind of person" ;> 15 years later we are still as happy and madly in love, its a great life. texans make GREAT hubbies!

lover boy and i got our little farmstead about three years ago and are adding one big thing a year, but of course all the little things add up so we are really busy. we got chickens the first year and butcher our chickens ourselves, just for us and my parents consumption. it is amazingly easy, but lover boy (the hubby) does the hard butchering part as far as the insides - but we do it as a couple together so i am involved in it all, he's just better with the knife around the sensitive areas.

we found our cow on HJO ;> she just gave birth and will be coming home to us in late september when she will prob be pregnant again. this has given us time to get some fences done, put permanent water to the pastures, build a milking area, etc. our farmstead hasn't had any maintenance fence or pasture wise for decades so we are rebuilding it as we go, as cash allows.

best of luck to you, it sounds like you have wonderful things going on.

Thank you Mary Jane! I thank you for YOUR passion for bringing people (ladies especially) together. Except for the past 7 years, I live in the suburbs and dreamed of having a farm to raise my kids on. They are all grown and gone and now we have 17 grandchildren (Including the acquired ones from my husband). For them, I would like to have a place of refuge from the world where they will feel loved, and have a chance to be on a farm and learn about animals. I have noticed how much the city folks crave the opportunity to visit the country and get back to the "basics". I want to provide that for our family and others!

Hearty BIG welcome Valerie! Looking forward to following you on your exciting journey.

cloversmum - So happy to meet you! I am sure that your son has shared some amazing principles with you. I, too, am planning to become a Certified Educator in Holistic Management. If all goes well, I will be joining up to mentor and teach others this Fall here in Texas! I would love to share more information about the program. It is not offered in all states yet. I mentioned in an earlier thread that I have started a blog that explains a lot about what I learned and how to make a Whole Farm plan. It is not quite ready yet, but will be within the month!

So happy to hear about your growing herd! Do you sell your milk or is it for homestead purposes only?

My son interned this past year with a farm using Holistic Management practices. He wants to become certified in Holistic Management International. Can you tell me more about your program you were in? Sounds like an amazing opportunity!

This group is an incredible source of encouragement, knowledge, and advice. I've learned a bunch. I have two cows and my Jersey is due to calve beginning of September. This will be our first experience calving and milking a cow. I've milked goats but never a cow.

Again, welcome!

Hello TxBiker Girl!!

I don't blame you for loving Texas. I was born and raised in Washington State up until 7 years ago when I met my Texas honey! We met online - never thought I would ever do that - but I've not regretted it! I love Texas and the spirit of the people!!

I live in Bowie, about 50 miles south of Wichita Falls. So you're south of Tyler? Tomorrow I am spending most of the day in Quitman. I am a member of a holistic management group that meets about every 4-6 weeks. We are learning how to process chickens!! I have never done this and I am excited to learn how! I believe that when processing any animal, that it should be approached with a sense of reverence and gratitude. The gal who is teaching us has that same philosophy.

Where did you order your Heritage Jersey?

Glad you are loving Texas!! Would love to meet up some time!

Nice to meet you Nellie Belle!! You seem to be interested in Holistic Management. I am so excited about this topic! In fact, I have just started a blog that leads the reader through the steps to set up a Whole Farm Plan. I am working on adding more entries before I actually "release" it to the public. I will let you know when it is ready!!
