MaryJane. I was wondering about the PVC pipe dimensions, 1/2" and the 7/8" hole in the cutting boards. This allows the 1/2" pipe to wobble inside the hole and the O-rings 1/8"thick x 13/16" ID are way big for the pipe. HELP! Are there any new revisions? What are we missing here. If you could let us know before we proceed that would be great. Just trying to get this right. Thank you! (Either the pipe is too small or the O-rings are too large.)

It's fun for me to try testing your plans too. I will hopefully be attempting some of the cheese recipes this week. It's been so helpful having someone who has already gone ahead (pioneers so to speak) who have gone through the process, trial and error and worked the kinks out. So thank you, and I will keep you posted on my progress.

That looks great! It's fun for me to have you "test" the plans, etc. in my book. I look forward to your feedback on the cheese recipes.

Presently, our little cheese cellar fridge is full of aging cheese. We've learned to check for mold several times/week. It's easier to nip it in the bud than try to fix it once it starts to grow. To that end, we've started waxing quite a bit of our cheeses and enjoying them soft, even things like Parmesan because it's easier to grate when it isn't super hard. Then, if we want it dry, I toss the shreds on a food dryer rack and Voila! Grated dry Parm. Wax helps discourage mold. Even so, if there's just one tiny crack in the wax, you can get mold. When that happens, just peel that part off and re-wax. Easy.

Well, we finally got a little time this afternoon to get the cheese press put together. Wahooooo! Now for making cheese!

MaryJane, Yes, I believe that will help quite a bit. That explains it quite clearly and there shouldn't be any problem. Thank you. We have all the parts and ready to put the cheese press together as soon as we get a few minutes. I believe I have a refrigerator that will work for use in storing and aging the cheese once it's made. If I'm successful. Thank you once again for all your help.

NellieBelle,
I added a photo of rigid white PVC under my main cheese press update. Let me know if you think this would have helped you?

We found the correct sized PVC pipe and fittings. I believe things are all going to come together now. Learn something new everyday. Didn't realize there were so many different o-rings and PVC pipe sizes etc. Excited about putting the cheese press together and start using it. Thanks again!

No, my husband just bought 1/2" PVC pipe not knowing. We will look for the rigid white PVC with inner diameter 1/2" and outer diameter 7/8". Thank you. Yes, it's disheartening to see the mess, but it is what it is and we will just have to deal with it. It might be next spring before we get more dirt in and get it seeded down again. All in good time I guess.

Redo landscaping indeed! It may take a few YEARS for my place to get back to normal. We are putting in an additional septic tank and haven't even started on THAT hole yet. It's a 3,000 gallon tank so the hole will be cavernous.

I'll post an update to clear up the thickness of PVC to use on the cheese press. It must be that nasty PSI thing in this instance also. Did you buy the rigid white kind like in the photos?
NellieBelle Posted - Aug 17 2014 : 09:15:36 AM
Okay, thank you MaryJane. I believe what our problem is, is that we have the thin walled PVC pipe. So we will get that corrected and proceed with our Cheese Press. Can't thank you enough for your help. We just finished putting in new septic tank at the back of our house. What a mess. Now to try and redo landscaping. :(

White 1/2" PVC is 1/2" wide on the inside (the amount of water it will hold for example--the same way garden hoses are denoted). It measures 7/8" on the outside unless there's some PVC out there that is very thin walled. If so, don't buy it. Get white 1/2" PVC that is 7/8" on the outside. And the 13/16" inside dimension on the O ring is just 1/16" less than 7/8" so it's a good fit. It'll need to stretch a tad which is perfect. Both PVC and O rings are sold according to INSIDE dimensions. Hope that helps.

With all the underground plumbing we're doing here this summer, I'm also having to figure out the PSI of the PVC I'm buying. Confusing!
