We're getting plenty of sunshine this month after receiving 2.22 inches rain!!!! Temps are staying in the 70s. Perfect.

We're harvesting and drying our usual fruits.

And we're planting a couple thousand native flower plugs in what we call our "bare spots" in our prairie, areas where we sprayed out a nasty grass that as it spreads kills any and all native flowers and grasses as it goes. It's an exciting moment for me because it's taken me 3 long years to get to this point and I've had a lot of tough decisions to make.

Maybe that's why I love autumn. In summer you have the business of garden/cows/chores on top of the household chores and all done in the heat which makes it a strain sometimes. Thankful for the ability to work but autumn is more pleasant, winding down, and like you said, shorter days to work on inside things we're not able due to time. I dried Darla up this past week, she has provided us with milk for a year now. AI'd her a couple weeks ago, so don't know if it took. Brought my two other heifers in with the ladies of seniority and even have Esther coming to the stanchion to eat. Such a sweet girl. All your produce sounds so good. I need to can some more tomatoes and soups then I think I'll call it good for this year. Ordered a Sun Oven. Sounds like a good idea if we would lose electric and plus I always have the wood cook stove during colder months. I have more quail hatching today and need to clean up my other two incubators to get going again. Enjoy your autumn.

I can't decide if my favorite season is spring or autumn. They both come as a relief from either extreme cold or heat, which is nice.

I almost ordered a pawpaw tree but decided I better wait. Yours are so big and beautiful!!!! And your quail adorable. It seems like that's been a constant in your life, baby quail. I should try some next year. I've enjoyed by newest batch of chickens. It's risky but I let them run free. It's just too much fun watching their antics as they waddle and sometimes race around the farm. We've had grasshoppers this year so they've been even more entertaining than usual.

Daisy's milk supply is holding up. She's a remarkable cow. Little Jubilee got her second set of vaccines recently. Her nose nursing prevention device is still in place.

I have the last of my peaches in the dryer. And pretty soon will need to work with my bees to get them ready for winter. It was a banner year for my leaf cutter and mason bees. They've multiplied beautifully. Our fall has been so warm and glorious, I'm still eating cantaloupe and watermelon and tomatoes (not a great year for 'maters though).

Yeah, Autumn is nice come to think of it. I'm looking forward to shorter days and more time in my kitchen to experiment with some different breads. Summer is such a day-long push to get everything done.

Plentiful harvest it appears. We had a good year of pawpaws. Only problem with them, they don't keep long and so they have to be eaten up before they spoil. So a good share of mine went to friends who had never had them or even new they existed. Your prairie is progressing. I haven't planted thousands, but hundreds of plugs. I have 30 3" pots of native prairie plants arriving next week. I love coming across a new prairie plant that has spread from some original plantings. Ordered cedar boards for some raised beds. More quail hatching daily. All ages and sizes. Such darling creatures. It's beautiful time of year, and my favorite. Cooler walks and the colors are magnificent this year. Happy prairie planting! It's worth the work and so satisfying.
