Posted - Sep 26 2015 : 7:38:16 PM Mary Jane, you know what's funny, we have ducks in a pen outside(they are up against a building) but, we also have coyotes. Last night, my sister and I were walking around outside, and all of a sudden, there was a howl. It sounded just like how a wolf would howl, only more high pitched, I knew it was a coyote. The night before, I was going to let Allie out, but the coyote pups were being so loud! One night, last winter, my dad was outside, and while he was standing in the driveway, some coyotes ran alongside our house, a lot of them, my dad said he has no clue how many, because it was so dark out, but there were a lot of them. We have never had a problem with them and the ducks, I don't know why, they come so close to our animals. Last year, one came out in broad daylight, right down our fence line, we watched him from the window. He was right next to our cows(the big beef cows). |

Posted - Sep 24 2015 : 08:52:41 AM Yes, the domestic ducks are rather defenseless; however, their antics are so amusing! I really love watching them and listening to them talk to each other. The other fun aspect is watching how little "Oreo" and "Friend" interact with the ducks. The ducks and chickens huddle together, walk together in a flock and actually prune each other. The hens do look a bit puzzled when their buddies jump into the little pools of water ... the hens cluck and scurry around the perimeter, finally settle down and contentedly peck beside the water.
I'm excited to cook with the duck eggs. From what I've read, they are amazing in baked goods. Several friends also like the duck eggs cooked for breakfast too ... said that the taste is better than chicken eggs. Not sure about that, but I'll try it.

Posted - Sep 23 2015 : 9:09:44 PM Very tempting. Yours are so cute. I have a pond, just need some ducks, but I've always worried about coyotes, etc. dining on them. |

Posted - Sep 23 2015 : 1:22:26 PM And, yes I do realize that two of them are not actually ducks! That is my "Oreo" and "Friend" who have been raised with the ducklings as Oreo had a very rough beginning and I didn't think she would pull through. But she just needed a friend and time ... |

My ducks are growing up! And they love their tubs of water!!
I got another seven ducklings this morning to have an even dozen ... still all Indian Runner duck varieties. I love watching them ... such characters, they are. |

Posted - Sep 10 2015 : 8:49:51 PM Maybe you could make an "island" in the middle of your pond as a safe zone for your ducks? I'm thoroughly enjoying the antics of our ducks. I transitioned them to outside this week; however, I am shutting them up at night as they really are quite defenseless. But, even at this young age, they are going after bugs like crazy! Cindy, you might want to wait to see what I think by next spring ... after going through a winter and having ducks around for a bit longer I may have a different perspective or experience! :-) |

Posted - Aug 31 2015 : 11:48:41 AM These ducks are really quite fun! I'm enjoying them immensely ... they are developing more personalities than most of my chickens and will snuggle up against my neck.
Now to get that barn built ... I had a bit of a panic moment this morning and then have to breathe deep and realize it will get done when it gets done. |
