Good morning everyone. Nice mild morning here at 56 degrees. Sun is coming up. Checked on Nellie a couple times through the night. Getting closer. Sweet William flowers grow in my wooded garden and out by the cabin. They bloom every year around Mother's Day. My sisters and I would always pick a bouquet for my momma for Mother's Day. So the flower is dear to my heart. We would all go out as a family and hunt morel mushrooms too. Good times. Busy here this weekend as always but more so that the vineyard posts are coming out and I have to keep my cows shut up. They may get to go out in the paddock, just have to wait and see. Have an enjoyable weekend!

good morning ladies! good morning janet, lovely flowers for mother's day. wishing everyone a wonderful mother's day tomorrow, i know it can be hard for a few of us.

slept late, got a bath and a read in to start my day, and out to milk before bea starts letting me know i am running late. we have decided her horrible moo sounds like a dinasaur. an evil, angry one ;>

we are at high-50s this morning also janet, but getting to mid-80s so need to get going before the warmth hits. have a GREAT day!

Just stopping in for a moment, needed to check and see if there was any AppleButter news yet. Good morning Cindy. Going to get warm here too, and the next few days. Lots going on. My vineyard will soon be a memory. But also, soon to be added pasture room. This will help tremendously. Then get the other BarBarA in and I will have three sections to rotate the cows. We will still build a weather pen in the middle section but we are finally getting things set up for the cows the way it should be. Have a great day!

I am on my way to the vet with Anna (she's loaded and ready to go). She has a pinkish discharge and isn't feeling well. I gave her 20 cc penicillin last night (10 cc in each hip) but I feel she needs to be looked at. Updates when I'm able.

good morning maryjane. good thoughts with you and anna, emergency vet visit is never fun - i know how much you must be worried. bea, sally and elsa send their love to her ;>

janet, i am sorry you are losing your vineyard buy so excited for you to have a third pasture. makes all the movement/seasons so much easier. last year lover boy accidentally had the fence guy cut down some native muscadine grape vines. two of them have grown back, so we are actually erecting trellis right where they are so they will grow on that as well as the trees (normally around here they just grow vertically in the trees every year). so now we will at least have a start on some grapes. another long-term accomplishment.

i am having fresh berries, a dollop of sour cream, and a drizzle of honey for breakfast. its so decadent. i think i have an ashley size grin on my face over it. like everything else, there is just no comparison of store bought to fresh home made.

we decided to head to town for mother's day lunch today, so off to sushi we go once i get my milk supplies cleaned up. have a great day ladies. health and happiness to anna.

Oh my MaryJane, hoping it's nothing too serious. Nice to have a vet available on the weekend for such cases.

Your breakfast does sound good. I just grabbed some frozen blueberries from the freezer for my dinner. Hoping to hear good news from MaryJane about Anna. I best get back at it. Lots of water to carry and hay to feed since the cows can't be in the pasture today. Maybe by this evening they can go back out.

Good afternoon after all, sort of. WSU gave Anna a thorough examination and found her to be a little low in calcium and seriously low in phosphorous, so they gave her some of that and immediately she perked up and started eating some grass hay. She weighed only 843 pounds upon arrival. Julie and I had a hard time getting her loaded because she was so weak that she kept stumbling and once tried to go down on her knees and I'd run out of ideas to get her to eat. I tried everything to a little bit of pasture again to probiotics to hay to grain. I left her at WSU overnight because they want their cardiologist to listen to her heart because both the vet and the intern weren't sure if they were hearing a heart murmur or not. More on that later--I'm not all that concerned just yet about that. They're also going to examine her stool for parasites.

But I'm relieved to learn that her uterus is fine upon examination and the discharge (looks like softened bubble gum and there has been a fair amount of it since Wednesday) is normal. Without a fever and given that the discharge didn't smell, she wasn't needing antibiotics like I thought. I've never seen an after-delivery discharge that looked like this:

When I mucked I found small piles of it here and there, like small fistfuls. But apparently, it's normal and her uterus is fine. I was worried that if I didn't get right on top of a uterine infection, I would be harming her ability to get pregnant which is what everything online says happens when they get a uterine infection.

Here's how skinny she was yesterday and even more so this morning.

Her diarrhea is probably the reason she got so low in phosphorous. It's been on and off even though I've kept her off pasture when it became explosive afterward earlier in the week.

They also gave her live rumen juices from a donor cow. When a cow has a health episode their good stomach bugs can die off rapidly and then things go south from there. It's hard to get it back in balance. They said they'd milk her and monitor her and then run a few more tests.

I'm so relieved she's finally eating. She's giving as much as 7 gallons of milk (sometimes close to 8) so she needs to EAT. Oh my, but she's a sweet, sweet compliant cow. Thank you for your well wishes. When Connie found out, she joined Julie and me for the trip to WSU. Anna certainly is loved and getting the best of care today.

Thanks for the update MaryJane. Sounds like everything is under control and she will be on the right track soon. Such a worry, when one doesn't know what's causing the problem, but thankful you have such wonderful caregivers and vet to help Anna out. Now that she feels like eating again and getting things back in balance, she will gain some weight back. You could stand a restful evening I believe. Have a pleasant one.

oh maryjane, my heart goes out to you. she is such a skinny girl, isn't she. glad they are getting her on the road to recovery. her milk production is fantastic, but yes it must take its toll on her.

i am hoping you get a nice warm bath tonight with some epsom salts and lavendar. take care of yourself. at least you know she is in the best of hands and you can get some rest too.

we just got home from town, spent an hour outside together on the porch swing just watching the chickens, birds, cats, cows. farm life is just wonderful.

have a good night ladies, get some sleep.
