Hello everyone! Another week, and in mid-December already. The year 2020 will be upon us before we know it. Everything is cows, cows and cows here. Darla, Nellie and now Millie have been AI'd. Darla's AI has taken we're certain and I believe Nellie's, but I like to go through two missed heats before I declare it a success. And now Millie. Really was a difficult decision whether to AI again, but I guess we are in for another round. Two steers processed, meat in the freezers, and three calves weaned. Ottis, Estella and Ollie. Five families getting milk on a regular basis which helps with the abundance of milk. Nellie's injured teat is filling in nicely, but teats are slow healing. Weather is back and forth and the coming week to be in the 40's which is wonderful this time of year. May your week be a good one!

What a happy little orchid greeting us this morning. Good news on the AI and weaning front. You've been busy getting all that accomplished. There's a reason they refer to it as "settled." Hope Millie settles also. We have six families who enjoy Miss Daisy's milk. That is a good feeling. And I guess in a way, it's more because Ester Lily, Maggie, and Maybelle (and Lizzy, soon) are providing for families in Montana. Right now my Montana girls are getting milked 2x/day.

It's snowing here--looks like a couple inches so far. Very lovely. I have a nice, quiet Sunday planned with lots of projects I'm hoping to get off my list, along with some Christmas gift wrapping.

Sure seems busy. Don't know if that's what's happening or I'm getting slower. Takes more hours to get things done it seems so probably the latter. Yes, the little orchids that surprise me with blooms are welcome little delights. They get me through the winter months as does the greenhouse greenery and produce. Nellie is not showing any signs of heat today. 21 days yesterday but she sometimes goes longer between heats so wait and see. We are suppose to get some skiffs of snow but not much this week. Watch out for the next. 8 degrees this morning so a bit on the chilly side. Looking forward to those 40 temps.

Your greenhouse looks yummy. Every time I harvest greens, especially this time of year, I'm grateful. Here's one of two bowls I grabbed from our greenhouse yesterday.

Lovin' the new view from my kitchen windows now that the curtain of pine trees is gone.

The day ahead looks glorious.

Good morning! Yes, grateful we have fresh greens this time of year. I picked beet greens yesterday to go with our meal. Yummy! Lovely view MaryJane. Sun shining bright on the hillside. This miniature orchid greeted me this morning when I went down to turn on the lights. The bloom is so tiny and delicate. It's one of the orchids I planted in a little log. Cute as can be. I think things are looking good with Nellie's AI. No sign of heat. 11 degrees this morning and a blanket of snow. Temps to go up later in the week, so it probably won't stay long.

Beautiful yellow Hibiscus blooms greeting you this morning would have to warm you on these cold winter days. They would me. It was 8 degrees this morning. Today is to be the last of our colder weather and I'm (as well as the cows) are looking forward to warmer temps. No snow in forecast for the next week, but that could change. Bring on the sunshine!

For Christmas Eve dinner, we'll be dining delectably on this red guy, a tom that Brian, Ashley, Adria, and Alina raised. He's gotten even bigger since this photo was taken. So, there'll be some outback butchering between now and then.

Ashley says this hen loves to pose for the camera.

At last night's poetry recital for 4th graders, they sang their version of the twelve days of Christmas at the end. Adria's closing line she dreamed up was:
... and a room full of fourth-graders singing off key.

What a delectable treat that will be and gathering with family. Such pretty turkeys they are, beautiful feathers. I love Adria's closing line and sense of humor. Nellie never came in heat so I am hopeful we won't have to do that again. We were in the 40's today and if feels so good to be out and about and not freezing half to death. I'm thoroughly going to enjoy the pleasant days ahead.

I just came up from milking and my new neighbors came with supper. I had already started supper but I can save it for tomorrow. My new neighbor came from Guatemala (she gets milk for her family weekly) and her parents are visiting from Guatemala for a few weeks. Her dad wanted to make us the traditional tamales, so here they came with them this evening. What a treat it will be. They even made the sauce. I can't say I've ever eaten them before so it will be a new experience.

I watched someone on a PBS food show make authentic tamales. I think it was on No Passport Required. Anyway, it made me want to try making some or at least eating some. Lucky you. Such a nice dose of Christmas cheer.

In my neighborhood growing up, a single Latina mother and her three adorable daughters moved in two doors down and she delivered plates of freshly made tortillas to us for years. It was an unspoken trade of sorts because my father showered them with garden produce.

I guess our education of foods continues. Fun to experience different cultures and the foods that are common for each one. The tamales were good, I don't know how I would describe them actually. I don't really have anything to compare them to. Very kind of them to share them with us. Another nice day coming and I'm ready for it.

Oh! I forgot to mention, you know that cute little trick Darla does with the towel, well a couple of days ago when I was milking her, she took it and dropped it a couple of times and I thought nothing of it, but then Joe spoke and and said, "she's eating the towel." I jumped up from milking and tried to get the towel but she was so strong and determined to get that thing down. I literally had to wrestle that girl to get it, and it was just in the nick of time because she was ready to swallow it gone. I had to stick my hand back in her throat and I didn't think I was going to get it. So, no more towels or rags for Darla. Don't know what possessed her to want to eat the thing after all this time. Perhaps a large ball with handle.

Good thing you managed to wrest that towel from Darla. I would bet that'd turn into a nasty "hair" ball in her rumen. Cows have such a weird tongue action. Once something is in their mouth, they can't get it back out because their tongue just keeps circling around and down it goes, which is what hardware disease is about. Once a nail or screw is in their mouth, down it goes.

Alina is sporting a new do these days. Cute as a bun-ny.

Well, I mailed off my last of everything holiday-ish today. I think a quick walk and then some bookkeeping. We've had several moose hanging around I'll need to watch out for, especially the mama/yearling pair.

What a pretty Alina with a pretty new do. Love to see moose, wish we had them here. Biggest thing around here are deer. Yes, the towel episode had me in a panic and sweat, literally. It was awful, but so glad I was able to grab it as it was all but gone. Whew. No repeats of that.
