Hello everyone! I visited here a few days ago and saw nobody had posted in a while, that’s alright but I have some news! Yesterday AppleButter had a new baby!! It’s a little boy named NutterButter(his middle name is Marvin, it’s my dad’s name suggestion)! I’m just a little sad because I used sexed semen but still got a bull calf. But he is very cute! There is one other issue, AppleButter got milk fever. Right now I’m sitting in the staw in the barn typing this on my phone, the vet just left and I’m waiting for my Butter girl to get up. She’s looking a bit happier and she almost got her back end up, but nothing yet. She tried to run to the milking parlor and she ate all of her feed last night, she was up at 9:30 last night eating some hay, but now she won’t get up. I guess we can just hope for the best! I will keep you all updated!

Sydney,

Sorry it is so late in the evening, but congratulations on your new bull/steer calf. You may be a bit bummed that the sexed semen didn't turn out as you hoped, but if he is healthy, that is a good thing. He is cute as a bug!!

Hope your gal gets on her hooves soon. If your vet treated her, it is just time and patience to see how well she responds. Sorry you are having to deal with a "Double Whammy" this go round.

Look under the posting for "Calcium" in Mineral and Supplements topic.
MaryJane just dealt with milk fever and she posted quite a bit of information. This is what I used on LacyLou the minute she delivered as a precaution.

Thank you so much!! Yes the calf is healthy and I am very happy for that! And I agree, he is adorable! Last night at about 7(the last time she was up had been 9:30 the previous night), she finally got up!! One of my dairy friends came and gave me some electrolytes for her and he also gave her a drench that is very similar to CMPK at 5:30. About an hour after that she finally got up on her own! It was one of the worst and best days of my life! The vet had said that he was 90% sure she would get up after having calcium, then he said they only had to come back to do Phosphorous on 2% of cows! AppleButter was that 2%. At 8:30 we had to run to Fleet Farm(we got her 7 minutes before they closed-whoops!) to get some CMPK gel. We have her half of it last night and the other half just after milking this morning. She is doing much better, she is eating like a little monster! I am so incredibly glad she got up!! She laid back down at 2 last night but was up this morning so that shows she can get back up! Thank you for the support!!

Congratulations on your newest addition, Sydney! He’s a cutie. So sorry to hhear at of Applebutter’s hard recovery. I hope she is doing much much better now! And yes, MaryJane just went through a similar experience so read up on her advice just like Darla suggested. Both my cow are due to calve in July and I’m going to take some preventive steps like Darla recommended. The experience sounds down right scary! But you are doing a fine job in caring for Applebutter. Well done.
